Future Proofing Your Home for Aging in Place

As people age, they often want to stay in their own homes rather than move to assisted living. This is called "aging in place." To make this possible, it's important to design a home that can adapt to future needs. Here are some tips and strategies to help you create a home that works well now and in the years to come.

Think About the Future

When building or remodeling a home, consider what you might need later in life. Even if you don’t need special features right now, adding them during construction can save time and money later.

Plan for Mobility

Getting around the house can become more challenging with age. One way to prepare is by stacking closets on each floor when building a new home. In the future, these closets can be turned into a home elevator shaft if mobility becomes an issue. This smart design choice allows for future upgrades without major remodeling.

Create Accessible Spaces

Make sure spaces are easy to use for people of all abilities. Wide doorways and hallways make it easier to move around, especially for someone using a walker or wheelchair. Also, consider installing strong walls in bathrooms that can support grab bars if needed later. The standard minimum for “accessible” is equivalent to 32”, whereas 36” is preferred to accommodate most/all wheeled equipment.

Make Everyday Tasks Easier

Think about how daily tasks might change over time. Installing lever-style door handles and faucets can be helpful because they are easier to use than knobs. Good lighting throughout the home can also prevent falls by making it easier to see.

Be Ready for Technology

Smart home technology can improve safety and convenience. Consider wiring the home for future tech upgrades, like smart thermostats, security systems, or voice-controlled devices.

Stay Comfortable and Safe

Plan for comfort and safety. Non-slip flooring can reduce the risk of falls. A zero-step entrance makes getting into the house easier for everyone. Also, having a bedroom and bathroom on the main floor can be a game changer if stairs become difficult.

Why Plan Ahead?

Planning ahead means you can enjoy your home longer while staying safe and comfortable. Even if you don't need these features now, designing with the future in mind makes aging in place easier, saving money and stress down the road.

By following these tips, you can design a home that supports your needs both now and in the future. A little planning today can make a big difference tomorrow!
